MUMBAI: Chief national coach P Gopi Chand has always believed that rigorous training is more important than competing in tournaments.
While the policy drew a lot of flak from a certain section of players two seasons ago, the former All England champion continues to stick by it.
In a latest case, India No. 5 P Kashyap and national men's doubles champions Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas have not been included in the squad for the German (Feb 24-Mar 1), All England (Mar 3-8) and Swiss Opens (Mar 10-15) as Gopi believes the shuttlers need to be training in their backyard.
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) in a selection committee meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday announced a nine-member Indian team including Chetan Anand, Aravind Bhat, Anup Sridhar, Anand Pawar, V Diju (men), Saina Nehwal, Aditi Mutatkar, Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurien (women) for the three stop tour.
1x1 polls

Kashyap, ranked 49 in the world, has had a dismal start to the new season, with opening round exits in both the Malaysia and Korea Super Series events.
Rupesh and Sanave too had nothing to show with a first round loss in Kuala Lumpur and a second round exit in Seoul, having got a bye first up. However, Gopi said the current performance had no bearing on his decision.
Interestingly, Saina, who is also coached by Gopi, will be competing in the All England and Swiss Opens. "I've made an exception in Saina's case because she's playing well at the moment."
